2010-09-13 An event entitled 'International week on micro and nanotechnologies for space 2010' will be held in Noordwijk, The Netherlands from 13 to 17 September 2010.
This programme is designed around a series of workshops and roundtables on space applications. It will build on previous events sponsored by the European Space Agency and Caneus International, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the development of micro and nanotechnologies for aerospace applications.
Micro and nanotechnologies have significant advantages for space applications in such areas as Earth observation, navigation, communications and scientific missions. Specific benefits include fostering new types of missions and instruments, reducing cost, size, mass and time from mission conception to launch and increased performance, reliability and redundancy.
The roundtable will focus on micro and nanotechnologies for space applications like Earth observation, navigation, communications and scientific missions.
The workshops will focus on fostering international collaboration on the development of advanced micro and nanotechnologies for next generation aerospace systems. The workshop will emphasise measurable deliverables with lasting impact for the industry.

2010-09-13 The Second Workshop on Controlled Natural Language will take place from 13 to 15 September 2010 on Marettimo Island, Italy.
Controlled natural languages (CNLs) are subsets of natural languages. They are created by restricting grammar and vocabulary in order to reduce or eliminate ambiguity and complexity. Traditionally, controlled languages fall into two major types: those that improve readability for people, and those that aid automated analysis of the language.
The event will address a wide range of issues connected to controlled natural languages, including:
- the design of CNLs and comparison between CNLs,
- lexical and syntactic issues for CNLs,
- CNL semantics and knowledge representation,
- expressivity within CNLs,
- reasoning in CNLs,
- theoretical results for CNLs,
- CNLs for interaction, communication and dialogue,
- CNL in the context of linked open data (LOD) content creation and annotation,
- CNL and the semantic web,
- tool support architectures for CNLs,
- linking text mining to CNLs,
- CNLs and mobile computing.

2010-09-13 The Third International Workshop on Computational Social Choice (COMSOC-2010) will take place from 13 to 16 September 2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Computational social choice is a new discipline where social choice theory and computer science meet. On the one hand, it is concerned with the application of techniques developed in computer science, such as complexity analysis or algorithm design, to the study of social choice mechanisms, including voting procedures or fair division algorithms. On the other, computational social choice is concerned with importing concepts from social choice theory into computing. For instance, social welfare orderings originally developed to analyse the quality of resource allocations in human society are equally as applicable to problems in multi-agent systems or network design.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together different communities: computer scientists interested in computational issues in social choice, people working in artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems, logicians interested in the logic-based specification and analysis of social procedures, and people coming from the field of social choice theory.
The workshop will be accompanied by a 'LogICCC Tutorial Day' with general introductory talks.

2010-09-13 The Fifth South East European Doctoral Student Conference (SEERC) will take place on 13 and 14 September 2010 in Thessaloniki, Greece.
This edition of the event builds on the success of previous conferences, each attracting more than 100 papers from countries all over the southeast European region and beyond.
The aim of the event is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between young researchers and to consolidate the established network of scholars currently undertaking research in and around the topic of southeast Europe. SEERC is also looking to establish and reinforce collaborative links between disciplines, laying the ground for innovative ideas and helping to engage the wider academic community.
The conference is open to young researchers currently undertaking doctoral studies or in their early post-doc career (up to two years after their PhD). It has an interdisciplinary focus and the themes and topics reflect the organisation of research by tracks of interest.

2010-09-13 A conference on 'Risk and management of current and future storm surges' will take place from 13 to 17 September 2010 in Hamburg, Germany.
Storm surges represent a major type of natural hazard, frequently causing losses of lives and substantial economic damages. Besides climate change drivers, storm surges are exacerbated by anthropogenic forcing including intensive land and sea use along the river-coast continuum. A recent OECD global study of risk of extreme surge-induced floods in 136 port cities suggested an increase in exposure of people and assets to storm surge risk by 2070.
Answers require interdisciplinary approaches and to overcome the traditional fragmentation in scientific and coastal user discussions.
The event's objective is to work towards a common perception of the key issues including the role of mitigation and adaptation. This includes fostering a mutual understanding of the relevant spatial, temporal, and institutional scales that need to be considered in response to current and future storm surge risks.
Attendees will discuss such diverse topics as: coastal engineering, coastal zone and river basin management, urban, coastal, marine, and emergency planning, coastal communities and harbour authorities, operational oceanography and coastal geology, climate research and storm surge modelling, weather services, and insurance and finance sector concerns.

2010-09-13 The Third Physcomitrella Genome Workshop will take place on 13 to 15 September at the University of Freiburg, Germany.
The Physcomitrella genome was first sequenced at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) of the US Department of Energy and published in 2008 by a consortium of 70 researchers from 45 different laboratories. The event will focus in particular on the annotation of this genome, which has become a model organism in applied and in basic biology.
The workshop will aim to create a lively working atmosphere and by providing ample space for hands-on mining and annotating of the moss genome. Insights into genomic resources for other bryophytes will also be provided.
The organisers of the conference have constructed a website containing information about the moss genome. The event will talk about this new resource, which aims to attract additional researchers to help in further annotation of moss genes.

2010-09-12 A conference on 'Highly oscillatory problems: from theory to applications' will take place on 12 to 17 September at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, UK.
Highly oscillatory phenomena occur in a wide range of mathematical applications: from fluid to solid mechanics, electro-magnetics, acoustics, combustion, computerized tomography and imaging, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, plasma transport and electrical engineering. Such phenomena have attracted a great deal of mathematical attention, mainly in harmonic analysis, asymptotic analysis, homogenization, differential geometry, theory of Hamiltonian systems and theory of integrable systems.
Even with significant interest, they have a reputation of being difficult to analyze. However, once the phenomena have been understood from the mathematical standpoint, effective computational algorithms often follow.
The conference will bring together scientists and researchers who specialise in this particular field of mathematical phenomena.

2010-09-11 A workshop on 'Submarine paleoseismology: the offshore search of large Holocene earthquakes' will take place in Obergurgl, Austria from 11 to 16 September 2010.
The aim of the conference is to create a discussion platform for researchers that are already, or may become, involved in submarine paleoseismology. This new field of study merges and integrates two well-established disciplines: paleoseismology and marine geology. This follows calls by scientists from both fields to broaden paleoseismology to include the marine environment. Since then, study has gone on in several areas around the world, notably the Marmara Sea, Oregon Coast and the New Zealand, Japanese and South Iberian Margins.
Submarine paleoseismology is a promising addition to land-based research on Holocene faulting and paleoseismicity. (The Holocene period started 12,000 years ago and continues today.) Compared to traditional, land-based paleoseismological techniques, submarine paleoseismology has a number of unique attributes:
- marine sedimentation is generally continuous in time and space,
- marine geological and geophysical instrumentation allow the exploration of large areas in a relatively short time,
- offshore regions are essentially free of human disturbance.
